Just Add it to the List

Before I dive into today's post, I need to express some serious gratitude.

First and foremost, to the readers of this little ole' blog.  It means so much to me that you take the time to actually read what I write (okay, so maybe some of you just skim through the pictures and that's okay too).  I truly enjoy blogging and I sincerely appreciate all of your support.

Next I want to thank Lindsey from Better After for featuring our quatro banos on her blog yesterday.  You will have to check it out.  I have been called a lot of things in my lifetime, but nothing quite as lovely as what Lindsey called me.  You will have to read it for yourself.  It's a great blog full of before and afters of all kinds of projects.

I also want to thank Seleta from Simply Seleta for offering an amazing giveaway, which I won!!!!!
It was a $200 credit for Joss and Main.  Joss and Main is an on-line retailer that offers home goods at deeply discounted prices.  Could that possibly be more up my alley?  Seleta's blog was the very first blog I discovered and I was instantly hooked.  I might be her biggest fan.

Here she is with her adorable family.

Okay, time to get down to business:

When we remodeled our first house, we wanted the kitchen to be completely open to the family room. Mainly because our kids were little and we needed to be able to see them at all times.  When we bought this house and we were deciding on the layout, we still wanted an open feeling, but we wanted a bit more separation between the kitchen and the family room.  We entertain a good deal and it gets a little loud in the kitchen sometimes.  The kids will be in the family room watching a movie and asking us to keep it down and we'll be in the kitchen telling them to turn the TV down.  Anyway, you get the point.  I'm sure you're thinking by now, "what is her point?".  My point is, it would have been nice to have had a pocket door installed in between the kitchen/dining area and the family room. However, the family room is an addition put on sometime in the 70s and the wall in between the dining room and family room is solid brick.  So a pocket door wasn't even an option.  Luckily, I have come up with an even better solution, a sliding barn door.  They seem to be a big trend right now, but I don't think it's a look I would tire of.

Maybe something like this one.  Although we would only have a door on the left of the opening.

I like the rustic look of this one.

I love the idea of using glass doors, but with three kids in the house, things seem to mysteriously get broken around here (OFTEN)!  I'd be afraid a ball may accidentally get thrown at the glass doors.

Since our opening is so big, we would probably have to have two doors bolted together, like these.

Here is the opening we currently have (that's my daughter dancing in there).

This is the wall where the barn door would normally reside.

When the door is open, it would serve as a focal point for this big blank wall.  The hardware will cost several hundred dollars and I would either have to find the perfectly sized doors or have one made.  Therefore, this project will just have to get added to the long list of other projects we want to tackle around here.  Hopefully by the end of this year, we can make this happen.  Of course, I'll keep you posted.

  1. We are finishing our basement (hopefully soon here!) and will be putting our 2 oldest into a large room and want to subdivide it in a non-permanent type of way. Give them their own rooms w/o putting in 2 rooms--I like the sliding barn door idea.

  2. That is such an exciting project! I'm going to live vicariously through you. Love how much character an old barn door brings to the space. Have you see Emily's at Jones Design Co? We have that same problem in our house with the loud kitchen and the kids asking us to keep it down while they watch a movie! Funny.

  3. Same thing here - the kitchen and family room are almost one room. It has its advantages and disadvantages. I love the barn door idea! What a gorgeous way to add separation and character! It would probably block out more sound than the glass and would be more durable. Love the idea!

  10. Really like the idea of two smaller doors bolted together or even separate to create this look. We've looked into having this done and it gets expensive quickly! Two doors just might cut down on the cost!
