Heading Home

On Wednesday I loaded up the kids in the car and headed South for Spring Break.  Not South as in warm sunny Florida or the Carolinas, but South to my parents' home in Kentucky.  Well technically Southwest.  Even though we live in Kentucky, since it's just outside of Cincinnati, OH, it doesn't always feel like the South to me.  I have now lived half of my life elsewhere, but I still call my hometown "home".

On our first day "home", my mom and I ventured out to the one and only Antique store in the county (yes, I said county, not city or town).  I make a point to go to this store each and every time I go home.  My mom and I could spend hours there, but on Wednesday we had just one hour before they closed.  I wasted no time hunting for junk treasures.

Here are a few of the things that caught my eye.

These antique cast iron claw foot tubs were only $375 each.  They would need some reglazing, but still an amazing deal.  Too bad I don't need one.

I didn't buy this, but I am thinking about going back and getting it before we leave town.  I have been looking for an old map of Kentucky to hang in the office.  It's not quite as large as I what I had in mind, but I think I could make it work.

I love this old wash stand and it was only $79.  I couldn't think of where I would put it, but I am really drawn to it because of the worn finish.  I can see Sarah Richardson using something like this in her farmhouse.   Maybe I should give her a call and ask her if she wants me to grab it for her.  Ha!

Both of these sets of french doors caught my eye because of my new obsession with adding a sliding barn door in our house, as mentioned in this post. I have no idea if the dimensions were even close to what we need and the price on both was a little steep, so I kept moving.

Another treasure I passed up, but I think with some TLC this would look awesome next to our fireplace with a few white birch logs in it.

I think I was feeling rushed, because I also passed this up.  It's actually an old funnel, but it was only $28 and I think it would make a really funky light for my boys' room.  I may have to grab this too when I go back for the Kentucky map.

Finally, something I did buy.  This brass bowl caught my eye as soon as we walked in.  It was only $6 so I snatched it up before we left.  I love the shape and the tarnished finish.

I also ended up with this old metal milk crate.  I left behind the contents.  I can think of so many uses for this little treasure.

I wasn't even considering this dresser, just thought I would show you a picture of me in my "uniform".  Pretty sure someone should nominate me for the show "What Not To Wear".  I've gotten into a rut of wearing my workout pants, a sweatshirt and my J. Crew vest everywhere I go.  I have several pairs of the pants and a few sweatshirts.  So I do mix and match!  My husband will come home for work and say "hey, didn't you wear that yesterday?" and I'll reply "no, I wore the other black workout pants and the blue sweatshirt, duh!"  I keep telling myself I will change my fashion ways as soon as it warms up.

On Thursday, my mom and I decided to take the kids on an hour long journey to the movie theatre.  Did I mention they live in a small rural town with Wal-Mart being the largest retailer?  Anyway, during the drive, I kept pulling over to take pictures.  My kids were getting really annoyed, but I sometimes I get a little carried away with my camera.

Here are a few of the random shots I took on our drive along the rural Kentucky roads.

Just in case you're looking to buy a sweet little red tractor.  I should have zoomed in on the phone number for all of those interested.

Now, all you Western Kentucky readers will, no doubt, know that this is a belt line for coal.
However, my four year old thought it was a roller coaster.  I explained to him that it is a roller coaster, for coal!

I had to pull over and take a picture of this beautiful open field of purple weeds flowers.  Even the kids were impressed with this sight.

Now, where do I even begin.  This poor dog has had me perplexed for years.  Every time we drive by it, I wonder what in the hell these people are thinking.  First, why do they have a giant ceramic dog in their front yard.  And second, why does the poor thing have a light pole running right through the middle of his body?  It's just not right!

I hope you enjoyed the little tour of Western Kentucky.  Y'all  come back now!

  2. Great stuff, Andrea. What fun to do that with your mom. I am supposed to go furniture shopping with my mom today if her painter gets through early enough. There is a front yard of a house here with a purple front yard. Those are pretty, but they are weeds.

  3. Isn't it fun to go home to your "roots" and visit the places you love? I was born and bred in central KY but have lived in NC the past 5 years- I always love to go back home for antiquing, seasonal festivals, familiar historic main streets, breathtaking country roads flanked by horse farms, and good ole' Kentucky hospitality :) I can't wait to get back there someday!

  4. Hey Andrea! I have a map of Northern KY that Jim's grandmother Lucille Glass did as a pen and ink drawing. It is VERY similar to that Kentucky pic you were contemplating in that it has different local landmarks picked out along the edges and it's shaded in muted colors. Its probably about the same size as the KY pic and you might be able to hang them side by side instead of one BIG map. We have several copies of it and I'll drop one by your house. Also, she grew up in Ft. Thomas and spent most of her married life at 123 Riverside!
