I BET YOU THOUGHT I WAS GONE FOR GOOD

I realize I fell off the blogging wagon.  Here's the reason why......

Around 5:00 a.m. on December 1, 2014, after just returning home from celebrating Thanksgiving with my family, the phone rang.  When the phone rings at 5:00 a.m., it's never good.  My husband answered the phone and I immediately sat straight up in bed.  He said, "it's your sister" and he handed me the phone.  She proceeded to tell me, in a fairly calm manner, that my mom had fallen down a flight of stairs at home and she was in the emergency room.  She didn't have much more information and told me she would call me back soon.  I didn't panic at first, because my sister didn't seem to be panicking.  About five minutes later, she called back, this time, with panic in her voice, she told me that our mom had stopped breathing briefly and they were going to life flight her to a bigger hospital 45 minutes away.  I jumped up, stuffed a few random things in a bag and called my dear friend, Lisa.  Through tears, I explained to her what had happened and asked her to come over and make the 3.5 hour drive to the hospital with me.  I didn't know at the time what was going on or what was going to happen to my mom  I wanted my husband to stay home with the kids in case they needed him.  Lisa, being the amazing friend she is, didn't even hesitate. She threw on some clothes and was at my house within 10 minutes.

During the long drive, my sister called with updates.  My mom had been transported to a larger hospital, she had a breathing tube in and was unconscious in the ICU. We made it to the hospital in record time.  When I first saw my mom, lying in that bed, unconscious, hooked up to all kinds of machines and tubes, I lost it.  I was not at all prepared to see her like that.  For the next three days, she remained unconscious.  The only thing the doctors could tell us is that she sustained a serious brain injury from the fall.  They felt confident that she would eventually come to, but they could not say when.  We kept a constant vigil around my mom.  She has a big family and so does my dad.  Family and friends were there everyday, praying over her.  My sister, my dad and my brother all took turns sleeping in the ICU room with her.

After three days, she began to come to very slowly.  She first started to move her fingers a little and then she began to mumble a bit.  Over the next few days, she was able to say a few things, most of them not making sense, but the doctors still saw it as progress.  She did not open her eyes for more than a couple seconds at a time during this time.  She was eventually moved to a regular room and slowly made more progress. After about a week, she was transferred to a rehab facility.  She went through intense physical, occupational and speech therapy for three weeks.  She finally came home on New Year's Eve day.

My sister and I spent many days/nights at my parents' home during the months of January and February.  We would each take a shift of a few days at a time.  Back at home, our friends and loved ones were so very generous to pitch in and help with our children, bring our family meals, and offer their love and support.  I was truly amazed by the generosity and kindness that was shown to our family during this time.

My mom has no recollection of the fall, the hospital stay, the rehabilitation or the first couple months of being at home.  Her long term memory is pretty good, but she has trouble with her short term memory.  Physically, she is doing very well.  She is exercising, cooking and socializing with friends and family.  Her vision was affected by the fall and she has not been able to return to work or drive yet.  She was a big golfer and hopes to be able to play again.

When all this happened, my mom was my main concern, of course.  Everything else kind of came to a halt.  We did celebrate Christmas, but it was very bittersweet without my mom there.  I did my best to hold it together for my kids' sake, but caring for my mom and helping out my dad really took a toll on all of us.  Homework sometimes didn't get completed, laundry piled up, and we had cereal for dinner on many nights.  Thankfully we all survived and and my mom is on the mend.

Over the past couple of months, I have gotten back in to my old routines at home - constantly chauffeuring children around town, volunteering at school and squeezing in some design work.
As a matter of fact, before my mom's accident, I managed to tackle some big projects around the house too.  I do so enjoy decorating my own home and helping others make their homes beautiful.
Soon, various projects that have been taking up a good amount of my time will be coming to and end and I am making a commitment to work more.  With summer right around the corner, e-designs are going to be keeping me busy.  I promise to be back soon to share some progress shots from around here, several designs I have worked on recently and an e-design special offer.

I can't tell you how appreciative I am for all the emails I received inquiring about my mom or just simply checking in.  They meant a lot to me. This blog has been such a great outlet for me over the past few years.  I'm just not ready to give up on it.

IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS

I am not normally one to rush into Christmas.
Thanksgiving is my very favorite holiday and I like to give it its due respect.
However, this year, with the first big snowfall coming on November 17th (YIKES!),
I might be able to get into the Christmas spirit a little earlier.

Especially since I am, once again, joining the Twelve Days of Christmas Tour of Homes
with these fabulous bloggers.......

It all starts on December 1st.  Being a slacker, I requested to be the last one on the tour.
On December 16th, we hope you will all link up your Holiday Home Tour.

Before I go digging through Christmas decor and dragging out the mistletoe,
I had better locate all the snow gear.  Looks like we're going to be needing plenty of it this year.

I SURVIVED ANOTHER SUMMER

Don't let the title mislead you, I actually love Summer.
Every year, about mid-February, I long for the lazy, hot days of summer.
I relish sleeping in, no homework and a lighter activity schedule.
But then comes August 1st, and I begin to crave routine.  I'll admit, I thrive on a set schedule.
I am pretty good about "going with the flow"
and I usually try to plan one or two activities during the week to keep the kids entertained.
But, truth be told, I like to wake up at the same time everyday
and I like to know what my day will entail.  I also thoroughly enjoy some alone time.
Our summer schedule prevents all of these things from happening.
Well, I suppose I could wake up at the same time everyday.
But if I don't have to, chances are, I won't.

You see where this is going, right?
IT'S TIME FOR MY KIDS TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL!
There, I said it.  If that makes me a bad mom, then so be it.

Before I jump back into blogging, I thought I might give you a peek at our summer.
We didn't take any big trips and we didn't do anything too adventurous.
But we did make the most of our unscheduled time together.

Looking back at these photos, it appears we had quite a big time. Never a dull moment, that's for sure.
FYI,  I was forced to retreat to a quiet corner of my room to finish this post.

I'll be back to regular blogging soon.

SPRING BREAK 2014 - MEXICO

Well, it's only taken me a week and a half to get back to normal after our Spring Break trip. .

Our trip to Mexico started off with a little snafu.
We had this trip planned for quite some time.
About a month before the trip, my husband found out he had to be in Milwaukee for work,
four of the seven days we were planning to be in Mexico.
There was no getting around it.
We tried to arrange for him to come down for the last couple days of the trip,
but the difference in airfare didn't make financial sense.

So off to Mexico I went with these three......

Oh, and we met my sister, her family and my parents in the Charlotte airport.
After a six hour delay, and a little time at the airport bar with my sister,
all eleven of us continued onto Mexico.

We rented this house.
It was AMAZING!
It was big enough for everyone to spread out and have space,
but it also had several common areas where we could all hang out together.

Our trip consisted of plenty of adventure and tons of relaxation.
I think I can speak for most everyone, especially the kids,
that one of the most memorable parts of the trip was our day trip to Xel-Ha, an ecological water park.
Everyone had so much fun.

Most everyone zip-lined and it was a blast.
Even my mother did it!
That's me at the top.  Don't worry, I'm not scared out of mind, just screaming my nephew's name.

Later in the week, we visited the ruins in Telum.
We left the little guys at home with my dad and brother-in-law.
We were afraid they would be bored and tire easily touring the ruins.
Wish we would have brought them along.
The tour was short and sweet and they definitely could have hung in there.

Just outside the ruins was a fabulous beach. The little guys would have especially loved this part.

Other than those two outings and a golf day for the guys,
we just hung around the house and relaxed.

and kayaked in the bay.......

and swam in the pool.....

and did a lot of hammock hanging....

and cousin time......

And then there were those really sweet moments.
Like when my five year old niece collected shells with tiny holes in them.
And with the help of her daddy,
made all her classmates palm leaves and shell necklaces.
And when my middle son wrote his daddy a message in the sand
and asked me to take a picture and send it to him.
And when my youngest son found the most perfect heart shaped piece of coral
on a walk with my mom and brought it back for me.

Lastly, I just couldn't resist turning a few of my favorite vacations pictures into water colors
via the Waterlouge app.

It was certainly a vacation to remember.
I will cherish those memories with my family forever.

Now that our kids have their passports, they are ready to travel the world.
I am already looking forward to our next adventure!

ADVENTURE AWAITS

Call us crazy, but we are going to cross the border with these three.

These look more like mug shots than passport photos.

The latest adventure involves Mexico and, most certainly, a few margaritas for me.

Funny, when I told them to go get themselves ready to have passport pictures taken this happened:
- my eleven year old daughter showered, put on nice clothes and braided her hair
- my nine year old son skipped the shower and put semi decent, but clean clothes
- my seven year old threw himself on the ground and protested the mere idea of putting on clothes
(three outfits later, he declared himself along with the maple syrup on his face ready to go)

We still have plenty of room on the "Travel Wall" for more adventures.

Clearly, I'l be praying about this upcoming excursion.

HELLO 2014

I bet you thought I gave up on this little ole blog, didn't you?
If I'm being completely honest, I do sometimes feel like my mom and dad
are the only ones that read it and the thought of quitting has definitely crossed my mind.
I know that's not really true and I sincerely appreciate
each and every one of you who take the time to visit my blog.
Just when I'm feeling like throwing in the towel or having a little pity party,
I will get the sweetest comment from a reader.  It is often times just the fuel I need to keep going.
I have always intended for this blog to be my creative outlet and hopefully inspire others along the way.
Nothing more, nothing less.

Now that I have eaten my weight in sweets and slept a ridiculous amount of time
over the last two weeks, I am finally ready to get this year started.
Before I go getting all creative on you again,
I wanted to share our family pictures we had taken last Fall.
I used one of them for our Christmas card and I meant to share right before Christmas,
but I was so busy eating cookies and sleeping.

The photos were taken by the very talented photographer, Alicia Eads.

This one made the Christmas card.

My little guy spied this tree as soon as we got to the park.
He must have asked 500 times if he could have his picture taken in the tree.

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I look forward to 2014 and all it has to offer.

THIS GUY

I get the pleasure of spending the whole week with this guy.
Okay, yes, I pretty much spend everyday with him, but this week, it's just him.
We sent the oldest and youngest to my parent's house for the week.
Having three children, we often try to spend one on one time with each of them,
but having a whole week all to himself is going to be pretty special.

We started the week off by making a trip downtown to see Lumenocity.

I realize that listening to the Orchestra and Symphony
may not be a the top of every nine year old boy's list, but this guy was a real trooper.

Maybe it had something to do with the amazing light show and
the impressive lego replica of Music Hall.

The highlight of his week, most likely, was the trip to King's Island yesterday.

We have season passes and I take him often, but, you see, I'm not a roller coaster rider.
I sat this trip out and he and his daddy got to spend some one on one time together.
Even though it will require a few follow-up trips to the chiropractor for my husband,
he braved the big rides and made our son one happy little boy.
It was a good day!

We have plenty more fun planned this week and it truly makes my heart swell
knowing how excited my son is about this time we have together.
I sure hope we can make this an annual thing.

Alright, off to watch some Shark Week episodes we DVRd.
The fun continues!
